what is an art exhibition
The art exhibition is traditionally the space in which art objects meet an audience for a temporary period unless it is a permanent exhibition. The art exhibition is a place of mise- en- scene in which the spectator moves around individually or in groups but always in movement. It is a space of movement, of displacement. It is a matter of covering the distance between self and object. The spectator becomes the editor, determining the circuit and thereby the sequencing even if there is a predetermined route or order, the spectator is free to move in his own will and pace.
An art exhibition can take place in a gallery or in a museum.
The art gallery is a private commercial enterprise that sales art objects of the 20th century and spreads, propagate and circulates this art form. This incorporates everything that can be placed under the term “modern art” which is used in first instance in terms of its time frame than of a question of style. Art forms that are represented are paintings, plastics, sculptures, graphics, drawings, Installations, video art, photography and related arts. The exhibition is the most important institution to spread and release art. It has played a crucial part in the market for new art since the 18th century and plays still today a key factor in determining the reputation and price of art. What is presented in an art gallery is decided by the curator of the gallery. Curators often create group shows concerned with a certain theme, trend in art or of groups of associated artists. On the other hand Galleries also choose to represent an artist exclusively.
The museum is a public non-commercial institution. It is funded by the state and earns by charges of entrance fees. A museum is consequently bound to a more general term and concept of art. The museum facilitates not a specific direction in art but is rather focused on displaying an overview, a profile within an art historic concern. The museum has in part permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions. Permanent exhibitions include the museum’s own collection in contrast to the temporary exhibitions that include thematic or travelling exhibitions whose objects are not owned by the museum itself.
Next to exhibiting art the museum’s tasks include collecting, conserving and storing of old and new art and also to promote education within their specific field. Concerning the permanent exhibitions the museum is a maker of histories in the way that it holds a record of art history whereby movements and actions live through their archives and their objects.
